GIVE ME SOME COLOR: Magic-milk color experiment

Okay. So I have been guilty of being little lazy for the past few days weeks. But even being lazy is a luxury with a 4-year-old at home, you know. My little daughter would not just settle for a "Lazy Mommy" anymore. And off I went to entertain her.

The festival of colors-HOLI just got over this weekend. So we were going to do something with colors today. When my daughter was younger we had done many of the common color activities, sorting, color play-doh, and so many other things. But this year in kindergarten she learnt the concept of the "three PRIMARY COLORS", so we decided to work on enhancing that learning. 

This experiment with milk is so popular over the internet that we decided to try it at home. Very simple, just a few common household ingredients and loads of entertainment.

Ingredients:
Milk
Dish washing soap
Food colors
Thats it....

Here we go.

Finally after the multiple attempts and various hues of colors, I was let go to be lazy again.

So there it is , a really simple and amazing experiment to witness a rainbow of colors.
The younger ones would just love to see the magic.
The kindergartners would love seeing the PRIMARY COLORS create so many colors. 
And for the older kids, lets talk about why it happens.

• The first ingredient milk (whole milk) has fat among its contents.
• Soap is a surfactant, that disrupts the surface tension of milk and reacting with the fat molecules.
• The colors help us visualize what actually happens.

For now I will just stick with the PRIMARY COLORS and the other colors that can be formed with them. 

So the final question to my daughter on what she understood for the day.

And she replied, matter-of-factly, "the three primary colors make 615 more colors??!!!!"

Now I do not know what is the significance of that number. ;-)

How to make a FEZ hat or Tarboosh :DIY

When I was in primary school, some of my seniors in the higher grades went on an international study trip to Turkey. We had a small power-point exhibition on their experiences and their learning.
I vividly remember two things of this incident, an amazing postcard of the BLUE MOSQUE in Istanbul and the feel of a soft FEZ hat one of the students had picked up as a souvenir.
So when ever I think of middle east and oriental, these two symbols crop up in my mind first.

A Fez hat has a lot of history attached to it. It originated as a military reform in the Ottoman empire in the 1800's. The hat has been a political symbol in the following years in the regions of middle east, eastern Europe and northern Africa. Dr.WHO, a British television series of many years saw FEZ hats being popularized as costumes.

Anyway it was neither the history nor Dr. Who and his Tardis that prompted me to make this. A project has been sneaking into my head for a while now. And I am slowly getting to put the elements together.

Here is what ensued!

All You Need:
Red felt
Braided nylon cord to make tassel
Red thread and a Sewing machine
Hot glue Gun
Stiff Interfacing / Cardboard
Paper for creating a pattern
Scissors
Measuring tape
Marker
Sewing pins

I have made this hat unlined. You can line the hat with felt or any other soft material. This hat can be used for making costumes, fancy dress competitions for kids, pretend play, Dr. WHO parties, or probably even to just teach children about a new country and its culture.

I let my daughter make a mini version of the same for her tiny head, we used card board and glue instead of sewing. And then came her endless questions on what , from where, show me.. etc. A bit of lessons about Turkey and Morocco in an afternoon!
Now she wants to visit there :/

Beach Camping and a little bit of Adventure: UMM AL QUWAIN, UAE

We made a mad scramble to spend some time outdoors this weekend. Very well aware that in a few weeks time the sun will be mercilessly roasting us here in UAE.

Having a taste of camping experience with our trip to Musandam in Oman
http://colorsofourrainbow.blogspot.ae/2014/12/our-musandam-experience.html, we got a little adventurous and bought our own complete camping gear.
Anyone starting out on camping in UAE must visit CARREFOUR. You get all the basic stuff there at nominal prices, good enough to last you for many winters in UAE. A simple cheap 80 AED 4 pax tent will do for a novice like us.

Now, next was the location. Where in UAE is the nearest place to set up camp?
Desert camping and mountain camping locations are aplenty, But what we were looking for specifically was beach camping because it would mean endless fun in the water. The rules in this part of the world are a little not clear. And to our best knowledge looked like these were the only places to go.

• Al Aqah beach near Snoopy Island, Fujairah
• Jebel Ali Beaches and Ghantoot, Dubai
• The east coast Dibba, Fujairah 
• Kalba, Sharjah
• Some beaches in Abudhabi.

Fujairah was a 2 hour drive away and is known to be crowded. Dubai needed permits, the route to Dibba seemed confusing with the Oman borders, and Kalba, Sharjah and Abudhabi were a bit too far to return back in case we could not discover a good spot.
So a little more research online yielded a place closer, precisely around 30 to 40 minutes from Sharjah.

• Al Raffah area in Umm al quwain.

We were so glad we discovered the place.

A bit of  help from Google Maps and we were on our way on the road towards Umm Al Quwain, an emirate of UAE along the west coast. Nearly 40 minute drive from Sharjah, through Ajman on a straight road, driving in the direction of Dreamland Aqua Park taking E11.

On the way, in Umm Al Quwain, near Emirates Motorplex,  we spot something mysterious on our left and make an U-turn to investigate. What looked like a dilapidated plane, and a small landing strip.

A huge advert for PALMA BEACH HOTEL was on the plane, and there were some cabins near by. A call to the hotel's number got us through to the hotel's desk, but seemed like they had nothing to do with that advert on the plane and were least interested in our queries.

Seems like the real story is about a Russian cargo plane that landed here in 1990's, but no idea why it remains here or was deserted.
Some online digging and the real story seems that this was an unofficial airfield being used for entertainment, and had closed down in the past few years. Various theories to why it landed here from making an emergency landing, to being used for trafficking in the past. May be the shell of the plane was planned to be used for a restaurant and entertainment. No one will ever know the actual story.

For now the mysterious plane sits buried in the dunes, on a decaying airfield, stripped of all its glory, as a remnant of the past, with a huge question mark as to who was the last pilot and why was it abandoned here.

Now back on to the direction we were driving, we crossed Barracuda resorts on our left and then Dreamland Aqua park. Driving on till we crossed a tiny bridge. We reached a round about after which is the Marjan islands, a part of Ras al Khaimah with quiet a few hotels.
But the hotels are to be dealt with in summer.

So we took a left turn on the roundabout reaching AL- RAFAAH BEACH. A quiet stretch of beach with pristine waters, which had a few campers and caravans stationed for weekend breaks. No boards regarding regulations was posted in the area. We stopped over to ask someone who looked like a seasoned camper in his caravan, whether pitching up a tent is allowed. Seems like the place had campers staying over the weekend and it was perfectly okay to do so.

So going with the word of mouth, we  parked our car and chose a beautiful spot, where we would set up camp.
But safer to check with the municipality for any permit needed.
By 1 pm we had pitched up our tent. 

A little dip in the water and then we had started our barbecue. The sun did seem hot till about 4 in the afternoon. By 6 pm we were done with our cooking. Had our fill of CHAI and sat down to watch the sunset. Our skin visibly tanned/ roasted, hair full of sand and tired bodies.

Then a nap in our tent and an early dinner ensued. Longs walks on the beach and that was pretty much it. A beautiful day!

The major drawbacks were the lack of any washroom facilities anywhere in the area. This forced us to make a drive to the nearest petrol station a few meters away at least two times. This also put us off from camping overnight.

A lot of powered motorbikes riding down the beach. A few para gliders were about. And as evening wore on lots of more people on the sand cooking, eating and having fun. But we still consider it less crowded than most other beaches.

All in all, it was a great day of sun, sand and loads of fun and little bit of adventure.

If you driving down this road E11, then there are a many areas of entertainment

• The Emirates motorplex for car and rallying enthusiasts
• Dreamland Aqua park for loads of water fun
• Umpteen hotels and the resorts like Barracuda (UAQ), Double tree Hilton (RAK) , Rixos Bab al Bahar (RAK). 
• The mangroves of Umm Al quwain are down the coast here but there does'nt seem to be an entry now.

THE FIVE-MINUTE D-I-Y VALENTINE CARD

Have you ever forgotten a special one's special day? Birthday anniversary or anything? Made a mad scramble to get a gift/card? Always the one to add "BELATED" to the wishes?

You are not alone. Of late its happening a lot to me. Laziness or amnesia, I have no idea.

February 14 is up the corner. I am not much into the commercial display of love! But I am all for it if its an excuse to show how much you cherish your family or loved ones.

So no over the top candle light dinners, or exaggerated bouquets at our house. But I helped my daughter make a sweet little card for her dad! We whipped this up in flat 5 minutes, with regular stationery and crafting stuff lying at home.

So here it goes.

ALL YOU NEED:
Chart paper
White paper
Glue
Scissor
Pinking shears/ Serrated craft scissor
Punch
Printed photo (Hint: Set print option to wallet size)
Scraps of ribbons
Sequins
Glitter foam or dust

 

She is gifting it to her dad today! Why wait till Valentine's day. Hope this saves you if you actually forgot February 14th :) 5 minutes flat and you are clear.

Window seat- Little pleasures of life.

What were the little things you remember squabbling with your siblings/ cousins/ friends for as a child ? 

Let us list ours 
- sitting next to mom/dad 
- the last bar of chocolate in the fridge 
- the TV remote 

and drum roll please ... 
- the window seat.. 

Remembered squabbling over it everywhere the car, the bus, at home when it rains, in the train on those long journey back home...and now of course on the plane.. 

Now every flight there is the two of us bickering with our daughter for that prized window seat.. We know we are supposed to behave like responsible adults and just offer the window seat to our wide-eyed, cute-faced pleading four-year old..! But guess we haven't grown up ourselves :-) 

So what is so great on the window seat for us . A view of the landscape, the cottony clouds, the lights of the city, greenery, desert, even the wings of the airplane. 

What does our daughter do when she is in the seat...? Flip the window shutters up and down all through the flight.... till a flight attendant or an annoyed passenger asks her to stop :-) (If only you know what she does next... the food tray... up and down.) Well pesky fliers we are... 
Anyways we now have a agreement among us. One person during take off, another at landing and one during the flight... 

Here is what we love about them. 

• Its so romantic to be watching the world below you.
• The lights of the city are all the more mesmerizing
• Amazing view of nature.
• The clouds, the sun, the moon and everything up there
• Makes air travel happier.
• You go all philosophical, what a small speck we are in this mighty huge world.
• Saves you from the food carts and the elbows of the cabin crew.
• What is not there to love about the prized window seat.
