SHARJAH PLANETARIUM: Learning about the skies and Beyond. (Free Space Journal Download)

Well we are back with a new place in the city we stay- SHARJAH, UAE.

This newly opened place is amazing and a power house for learning. What we love about this more subdued cousin city of DUBAI is that, it has so many hidden gems that make it an amazing place to be with children- sans screen time and the new age gizmos.

Well where did we go? and what did we learn?

SHARJAH PLANETARIUM: Learning about the skies and Beyond. (Free Space Journal Download) @http://colorsofourrainbow.blogspot.ae/
Looking at the sky when the lights were out, staring up at the stars, looking for stories they seemed to tell and wondering what was beyond. This is an amazing growing up experience. What better place to understand the sky and space than a Planetarium. Its pretty much sure that almost every major city on earth definitely has a Planetarium.

So off, to ignite our daughter's curiosity about SPACE and its vastness, we drove to the newly opened and glistening SHARJAH PLANETARIUM.

The Planetarium is a part of SHARJAH CENTER FOR ASTRONOMY AND SPACE SCIENCES

Here's the official page
WWW.SCASS.AE

The Planetarium is housed in a massive and brand new building. Opened in May 2015 in the University campus in Sharjah, it has a huge golden and eye catching dome representing the sun and the garden has rings and the planets :)

Here is the map for anyone who seeks directions.

GPS Coordinates: 25.285168, 55.46089

Well moving to what we actually did there , we saw an amazing show, many astrophysics games and telescopes to view.

The massive building seems to have many more things to pop up including a cafe and a souvenir shop, and probably many more shows too.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We will probably make another visit at a later date when there is a new show.

Well we couldn't let off our daughter till she could relate to what she saw there. What better way to remember than a tiny little journal of sight words of SPACE.

It took some time to make, the pictures, the writing practice space, the drawing and coloring space. and the easy sight words and images she could grab.

Well here is a glimpse.

The little one had a zillion questions to ask and million things to point out, and some to look back into her journal, many peeking sessions into the telescope.

Any one interested in astronomy in UAE can follow the DUBAI ASTRONOMIC GROUP. Their website has loads of articles for the space geeks. They have a great camping school program too.

Well there you go with the details of an interesting visit. We are definitely doing more star gazing this winter.

I found this very cute space activity in a wonderful blog,

Seems like much fun. We are definitely doing this. Need to scour for an astronaut play-set :)

Well closing off with some info on the place and the mini space journal download.

LEARNING MATH WITH POPSICLE STICKS : Addition of numbers for kindergarten

Learning Math with Popsicle Stick : addition of numbers for kindergarten @https://colorsofourrainbow.blogspot.com/

I love teaching my daughter.

It’s a challenge for me to make things interesting for her. Then I remember those days of my school and how we just went with the flow instead of being too inquisitive. Probably formal education of those days was to make a standard employable output.

I try to always add up on what my daughter learns at school, though it doesn’t happen as much as I would want it to. I really applaud the parents who completely home-school their kids. It is so much more difficult to plan, make the study materials and divide time for everything. But still there are amazing parents who manage it all.

And what good teachers manage in school is pretty much amazing. Getting down to the level of the kids, assessing the potential of each one of them and gently guiding the little ones through their journey of learning is definitely not a cake walk.

We have been doing numbers for quite some time, and my daughter loves math.  Teaching math on paper is a bit abstract, wouldn’t it be amazing to make learning math more concrete. We have done many amazing worksheets on simple counting, and basic addition of single digits.

Has anyone done this? We used to play lot with numbers this way when young.

Now how interesting do you think this would be??

My daughter loved it. Some colored Popsicle stick and never ending math fun. She is getting absolutely fantastic at it. Nothing too fancy and easy to acquire teaching tool.

I chanced upon some amazing blogs that provide plenty of mathematics material and some interesting activities and worksheets. Here is one exclusive and wonderful blog by an amazing Math teacher, BETHANY. And we did do her skittle math fun too. Check out her wonderful blog and the free learning materials she provides here http://mathgeekmama.com/

Hope you have a fun time teaching math to your kiddos.  And do try the Popsicle stick game, all the more better if you have colored ones.
I can’t wait to teach her more number games with them.

The Love of Books:SHARJAH LIBRARY

If there are a few things I would want to pass on to my daughter, among them are
- the love of books
- and the creativity and relaxation of crafting

You must very well know how crazy we are with books and reading from our previous posts

SHARJAH CHILDREN'S READING FESTIVAL

SHARJAH BOOK FAIR

Luckily our daughter just adores books since a tiny age, and we haven't lost the opportunity to feed her desire for more reading. She has a good collection of books in her reading nook. a tiny little library of books which she can pick up as she wants.

Over this two month long summer vacation her school provided her with a great summer project; to be a part of a book reading club. Oh! we were mighty delighted. We managed to get together a few of her friends and had a reading club every week, so many stories were read and so much of imagination of the little minds explored.

I remember the awe I had when I first visited the huge library when I was at school. The towering book shelves, the massive collection of books and being spoilt for choice. I guess it was the right time for our little one to get amazed too.

We decided to pay a visit to SHARJAH LIBRARY.

SHARJAH LIBRARY @https://colorsofourrainbow.blogspot.com/

The first thing that strikes is the beautiful architecture both on the outside and the inside. The motifs adorning the walls, the staircase, the domes, all so pretty. Silently we headed to the children's section first.

The library was pretty empty and it was nice after a long time to get immersed in the silent world of books. I have no idea how many books we read out to our daughter. There were educational books, fairy tales and other classics. She had a nice time, learning how to choose a book, the etiquette of being in a library and the very feel of having a never-ending choice of books  to read.
This is definitely on our weekly after school activity list, here on.

Leaving dad and daughter behind, I went over to check out the adult sections in the upper floors. Asking for directions to the medical book sections, I did find some interesting books on dentistry. Will be borrowing some once I make my library card.
Most of the fields of work had their own sections, Engineering, social sciences, arts etc.
There is a separate section for weeklies and periodicals too.

SOME INFORMATION ON THE SHARJAH LIBRARY:

  • Its Public.
  • Its located on the Cultural Square (Quran Round about) in Sharjah.
  • Open from 8 am to 8 pm only on weekdays (FRIDAYS closed)
  • A visit is completely free. A lending card has a refundable deposit of 150 AED, the borrower may take 5 books at a time and is to be returned within 15 days of time.
  • A separate and completely cute children's section, with books both in Arabic and in English.
  • Website : http://www.shjlibrary.ae/en/

Make books a part of your little one's world. And if you are in UAE do visit SHARJAH LIBRARY.
